Warning I may get into a little rant here and is not about money. Today made me question mankind and human nature again. For all those in a service type job were your clients set appointments with you, I’m sure you’ll know exactly where I’m coming from.
When you set an appointment with someone you are expected to show up right? If you can’t make it or maybe changed your mind you make a phone call and cancel! It’s common courtesy, the type of thing you are taught as a kid.
Roll reversal, when the cable company makes an appointment to come to your home you expect them to show. When they don’t, with no call, you get upset.
A woman called me last week trying to schedule a last minute newborn session. She told me her husband was deploying this Thursday so I went ahead and scheduled her for today. Today of course is Tuesday, one of my off days but no problem I like helping in these type of situations.
Well she called yesterday afternoon to confirm and ask about print and file pricing. When I told here her words were “holy jesus Christ” (sorry if that offends anyone). That gave me an gut feeling of what was going to happen. So I asked “so are we still on for tomorrow?” which she replied yes. Ok see you at 10 and I went on with my evening, but in the back of my head…
Sure enough 10am rolled around and nobody showed up, no phone call, nothing.
Now form my perspective as a studio photographer let me tell you a bit of what goes into a session where nobody shows. I arrive typically 30-45 mins early to set up lights, props, camera and backgrounds. Days like today I turn on the AC and of course the lights are on burning electricity for that time pulse the 30 or so minutes I wait for the no show client in case they are just gonna be late. After that I finally close up and head home (unless I have another appointment.
All totaled up its about 2 hours of wasted time. Time I could have been working on another clients order. Time I could have spent with my family. Time I could have taken just for me. And just as important, time that could have gone to another client. in the end you could say it is about money because I lost a bunch today, in overhead cost and loss of revenue.
Yes I know I should have collected my typical retainer but sometimes I’m just to nice and trusting when trying to be helpful.
Ok end of rant.
