Parked Domains for an Income Stream
Are you like me and have a few domains laying around waiting for a project that you had in mind once? Are you really like me and you of dozens of these domains or a couple hundred perhaps. Maybe you have them parked or redirected to other sites you are active on but besides that what do you do with them? If I see a domain or think of one that I think may be worth something some day or would be great for a little niche site I snatch them up, but often they just sit dormant.
What I used to do is use Adsense for Domains to park them and have the potential to earn a little money if they were stumbled upon. Well Adsense for Domains has been retired since June (more on that in a future post). Well that got me searching for other sources and found a couple that do the same thing and more.
I went through 3 before finally settling on one to try out.
The first was NameDrive.com and I wanted it to work as it was the first I tried (and they had an iPhone app, always a plus for me). The control panel was a bit confusing, hell the whole site was confusing. It has a lot if settings and this is what makes it a bit confusing, that and trying to figure out how to change something like the theme of your parked page. If you can get through the contol panel and get your domain fine tuned it may actually perform better than others, but for now it just made my brain hurt.
Who’s Your Daddy
The second one was GoDaddy which shockingly looked like it could be the best one. Gives you templates to choose for your parked domains and even adds a relevant article which will help you get some traffic. Over all it looks simple and easy to use and may get you the most traffic. Couple things stopped me from trying it out further. One I hate GoDaddy! Ok besides that they charge for this program, $5 a month which gives you the options above and a 60% revenue share from your parked domains. Want more? Then you have to go to the next level at $12 a month to get 80% revenue share and then you have the option to put the domain up for sale.
I finally settled on sedo.com to give them a try for awhile. The interface and set up was so simple it made my headache go away after NameDrive. They have a little five step wizard that walks you through setting up your parked domains.
type or paste your domains in the magic box
- accept sedo’s valuation of your domains or enter your own price (this is in case you want to put your parked domains up for sale)
- Set Currency
- Set Buy Now, Make Offer, Not For Sale
- Set Category (typically their suggestion is perfect)
- Select if you want premium service. This is a free upgrade that shops your domain around more than the basic one does, but it must be registered with one of their select registars.
Thats it your done! Head over to your “My Sedo” screen and you can see all your parked domains with their settings, along with traffic and earnings for each domain. Need to make a change or see detailed reports on a domain just click it. Easy Peasy!
Sedo not only shows your parked page with ads now, but has a link stating that it is for sale (if you are selling) for potential buyers. If it sells Sedo takes 10% for parked domains. If your domain is up for sale Sedo also will shop it around giving it more exposure. You can see one of my domains here as an example, please dont click the ads though (cant believe I just said that) http://sandiegobabyphotography.net/
Best of all it is all free!! I may try GoDaddy in the future and do some testing to see which is better but for now a free program is better 🙂
Now I hold now allusions that this will be a cash cow and warn anyone that thinks it will be. Google does not rank parked domains high on the totem pole, you will not be doing SEO for them either, but they are out there and people will find them occasionally If you have domains you are keeping around for the future you might as well park it somewhere and have the potential to earn a little on the side, perhaps enough to renew it for another year.
What do you do with your collection of domains? Are they collecting dust or money? Know of another service?
