You ever go through a period where you just don’t feel like writing anything? I mean I’ve had lots of ideas and been running post through my head, but haven’t had the energy or motivation to actually start typing.
Well I’m here for a recap of January, which ill start by saying it wasn’t a fun month.
Down side of Self Employment
Yes there are many perks of being self employeed but there is a very dark side. You are not always guaranteed a paycheck! January was one of the slowest months I’ve had, coupled with a slow December made it worse. Not having a lot of sessions at the end of Dec. meant not many orders in Jan. This all lead to a less than stellar income month and it ate into my cushion in the business account quite a bit. It being a sales tax month did not help matters.
A little stress but not panicking yet, making some budget adjustments have helped so far. Was still able to keep up all the auto payments to Ira and saving, bills paid and even made a contribution to the dividend portfolio.
No I Don’t Like That Color Either
Being caught up with orders and having more time on my hands lent itself to more house work. I actually got most of the house straightened up and cleaned as well as starting a couple projects. Yes our bathroom is still unfinished but I’m moving around so I don’t get bored with one project.
After many little “discussions” with the wife over colors for walls , I completed the laundry room and have moved into the dining room and living room. As with most things in marriage you have to learn to compromise quite a bit (i.e. let her have her way more often than not), as well as the occasional changing of mind. Like with the door moulding after getting half of it up.
With past health and being so busy nothing had been getting done and the house was showing it. So it’s kind of been a little blessing to have some time to start getting it straightened out. Trying to do a little each day and spending Sundays working around the house.
The Roller Coaster of Financials
As mentioned it was a rough month income wise, as in there was none. Well some but it was a definite negative cashflow month.
Net worth plunged about $4.5k at the beginning of the month, ill have to look closer to see why, but then climbed back to surpass the start of the month. Finally coming down a tick at the end but still up $70 actually 🙂 Sales tax did come out on the last day but doesn’t show until February.
So lets see where we are:
Assets vs Debt
Thinking on it as I review the table above the cashflow can be a little misleading. I mentioned before my reports reflect only my bank accounts but the wife does contribute to the bills and such but while I’m showing the full outflow of the bills I dont show her contributions which does of course affect the cashflow. For example that -$4,242 is actually a bit less due to her contributions. I’m going to have to figure out how to more accurately show this with out showing her portion as an income here.
Thank Budda for good month on the market and increasing home value once again!
How was your January?
