State of the Health Update

January 13, 2015 by Jeff Davidson Leave a Comment

2c5898aefc8b7c65b396bb9edd956ae2I haven’t written about health issues in ages so I thought Id just do a little update, more for me to get out how Im feeling but fro anyone who has been following me and my big this is whats up.

Overall I will say I have been feeling better an many ways, improvements over what I felt several years ago. Still confused on some and in other areas new developments have occurred. Even though I have backslide in a lot of my efforts things are still going well and trying to get back on track to maybe improve even more.

Anxiety

My big issue with General Anxiety Disorder seems to be well in hand. Used to be I’d wake up with sever anxiety and be hard to even get out of bed. Nowadays its pretty rare and if I do have anxiety a case can typically be pointed to. Using coping mechanisms I can handle it most of the time. Im not sure if its the meds, a new state of mind or some of both that is helping. I am currently taking the Effexor twice a day, but that was actually prescribed for the Fibro pains. Funny thing is that Fibro pain is actually a secondary effect for this drug and it is mainly prescribed for anxiety and depression. Eh what ever works.

I have also been doing my walks and meditations and I think this helps the most. Along with deep breathing often throughout the day (weather I need it or not)

LPR Acid Reflux

This has been a fun one and actually don’t know where I stand. Last year I was put on a new acid reducer called Dexilant and I loved it. Only had to take once a day and didn’t have to time with meals. Looking back I feel it was actually doing a good job. Of course with any new drug that actually works insurance has to screw with you. No generic and it was quite expensive and of course not covered. After fighting with them the final agreed but only covered a portion. Then got a card from the pharmaceutical that reduced a bit more but my co pay was still $48 for 30 days. In these tight times I couldn’t do this long, plus had to fight insurance a couple more times and it just wasn’t worth it. While trying to go back to the old meds had to do another round with insurance over dosage. Funny thing is this dosage was already approve before the Dexilant and had been doing it for quite awhile. So I had been off and on the drugs and during the off times I could definitely notice the difference, with heart burn and sore throats occurring all the time.

Now back on the twice a day, before meals, my throat has been sweeping and sore more often so a little concerned again. Of course after insurance approved the first 30 days I sit here waiting for approval again for my refill, all out again. I do have me next appointment tomorrow where Im pretty sure I will be getting my next endoscopy scheduled, haven’t had one in over a year and a half.  My first one was in midst of my severe anxiety episodes so going to a hospital to have a camera shoved down into my stomach was lots of fun. But now its not a big deal, I actually want to do it to stay on top of any problems.

Fibromyalgia

I still wonder at time if this is a correct diagnoses, especially those days where I feel great 😉 Well maybe Ill find out more soon. I was supposed to have a follow up visit in December with my rheumatologist and was looking forward to it because I have been having increase joint pain, especially in the wrists (couple days I couldn’t even use my left hand) but guess what? Yes Insurance!! Well kind of. My primary had switched medical groups so they were no longer covered or worked with this new group. So I had to go back to my primary and get a referral for a new rheumatologist and most likely be starting over. My primary even said they should do a new blood work up and x rays, etc. Which is good, been awhile since the vampires took my blood and I never had any X-rays. Last rheumatologist typically would just push a prescription on me when I had a new concern so looking forward to a new doctor and a fresh look. Problem is I forgot the date, I know its in February…

Well in seeing the primary she though my Gabapentin does was to high and most likely part of my fatigue (rheumatologist kept telling me to increase it) so she told me to back it down to 300mg a day. We will see how that plays out but so far not sure. This week the arms and legs have been pretty bad. I had thought I just was over doing it physically but after a day of rest Sunday its still there. Ill keep up with the 300 until I see the new doctor.

So thats it in a nut shell. Seem to be having more good days than bad, hoping this is the trend going forward. Need to get diet and other routines back on track to ensure it does. Hope you all are doing well with whatever ails you.

Here’s to improved health to all!

Q Speed Fast Melt CoQ10 Review

June 23, 2014 by Jeff Davidson Leave a Comment

Fast Melt CoQ10

So what the hell is CoQ10 anyway you may be asking? Well it’s kinda like a vitamin that exists throughout your body in every single cell. Your body uses it to produce energy to help in your body’s maintenance. It also acts like an antioxidant in protecting your body for those evil free radicals.

it is claimed by getting more CoQ10 we can help prevent heart failure, speed recovery from exercise and boost energy levels.

Now we do get it in small amounts through our diet. The foods with the biggest amounts of CoQ10 are your organ meats. If you are like me this is not an option. So many of us turn to supplementation.

Thats where this Qspeed Fast Melt CoQ10 comes in. Instead of popping a pill you place on of these in your mouth and let it dissolve. They say this helps speed delivery because it is absorbed in your mouth instead of having to survive in the stomach.

Instructions have ave you place it on your tongue and press to the roof of your mouth  for maximum effect. To be honest I didn’t notice any increase in energy, well ther e might have been some but with Fibro I’m feeling tired all the time. The time during my trial I did have less flare ups so it may have helped some.

to me the best part is that they tasted so fricken good, nice orange flavor. So good I wanted to have them all instead of one a day. Want to try QSpeed CoQ10 100mg Fast-Melt Tablets yourself? You can find them on Amazon and if you are a Prime member have them in 2 days

Keeping Your Skin Clean With Charcoal! + Giveaway!

May 18, 2014 by Jeff Davidson 2 Comments

Bamboo Charcoal SoapNow I don’t mean grabbing a chunk of coal and rubbing it all over your body, but rather this new soap that is made with bamboo charcoal.

Charcoal has been used for a long time in all sorts of ways for cleaning because of its great properties of absorbing contaminants. It’s used as a filter for cleaning air as well as water so why not use it for cleaning your body as well?

I was sent a sample of a new soap that uses bamboo charcoal as it’s main ingredient from Healing Tree Products. The rest of it is all natural as well with no chemicals or perfumes. Besides the bamboo charcoal it has only 3 other ingredients (Vegetable Oil, Water, and Glycerin). The Charcoal part helps to remove dirt and oils from your skin’s pores, opening them up to let your skin breathe and start its own natural moisturizing process. Without all the perfumes it’s also great for those with allergies.

I’ve been using it for over 2 weeks now with my manly Axe bath sponge and love it. It lathers up really well and doesn’t leave any residue or smell on you, just a great clean feeling. It may freak you out at first cause it indeed does lather up black. Kids will love it, getting clean while looking dirty.

Best Way to Start Your Day: Lemon Water

May 16, 2014 by Jeff Davidson Leave a Comment

lemon water for healthWhen my anxiety and stomach issues started up a few years ago I cut out a lot of things from my diet. First sodas then coffee, basically every thing with caffeine and sugars. So now all I drink is water and smoothies, and the water tends to get a little boring after awhile.

So now I drink nothing but filtered water with fresh squeezed lemon, sometimes to cure the carbonation craving ill use Perrier. Typically I will do a 32oz bell jar of iced water and a whole lemon. You can squeeze these by hand but one of the best inventions ever invented is the Lemon Squeezer! You just put a half of a lemon in it and squeeze and you will get so much more juice out of the lemon than hand squeezing, and the best part is that you won’t get the seeds in your drink. If you don’t have one of these you have to get one, just be sure you get a good quality one that is made of metal. I first bought a plastic one to try and save money and it broke after a week. The little bit extra for a metal one will go a long way!

lemon squeezer

Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

Lemons are packed with vitamins and minerals and great for pain management. Some of the health benefits are:

  • Aids Digestion
  • Boosts Immune System
  • Helps Lose Weight
  • Reduces Inflammation
  • Helps Fight Viral Infections
  • Reduce Anxiety and Depression
  • Prevention of Acne and Wrinkles

Now since I have started (over a year ago) Ive been doing this almost everyday, starting first thing in the morning (best before breakfast) and through out the day. Hasn’t eliminated my health issues totally of course but I do believe that it has helped quite a bit. I’ve even planted a lemon tree last year in hopes to not have to shop as much. Lemon prices seem to have been going up. I still get them at Sprouts at 3 for a dollar but that still seems high to me. Problem is the lemon tree only puts out a handful a year, maybe I need to plant a small grove.

Oh if you want to grab your own lemon squeezer from amazon the one I use right now is OXO Good Grips Citrus Squeezer

Do you drink lemon water? Have you noticed any benefits?

Natures Best Vitamin C Serum

May 3, 2014 by Jeff Davidson Leave a Comment

Natures Best Vitamin C SerumDisclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial, but all opinions expressed are my own.

I was asked if I would like to try and review this Natures Best Vitamin C Serum and said sure love to! You see I had it in my head that this was one of those liquid vitamin C things you put under your tongue for fast obsorbtion. Thought would be a great way to get some more vitamins.

Well the package arrived and I had it sitting on my desk when my wife saw it and asked what it was. I explained it was my new vitamin C that I was going to try. Of course she then actually read the bottle, especially the part about DO NOT CONSUME. Turns out you put it on your skin and the skin absorbs the vitamins. Helping reduce wrinkles and making your skin more youthful. I’m of course already youthful and as a dude was hesitant to use it so she gave it a try.

After a few days she came to me and ask if I noticed any difference. Now any guy in a relationship for any length of time knows this is a loaded question and can not be answered. Say yes you look much better and you’ll get the pissed off look and reply ‘what do you mean by that’. Or no honey no improvement and you’ll get the same reaction. There were no instructions on how often you are to use this so she used it a couple times a week and after a couple weeks told me she hadn’t noticed any real difference.

Of course when ever I was asked my answer was ‘you always look young and beautiful, don’t know if anything can improve upon perfection.’

On second thought looking in the mirror maybe I’ll give this stuff a try.

I will say that on first application it doesn’t leave an oily residue and there is no odor to it. Skin felt smoother a bit and a little tighter to me where I applied it. I’ll get back to you after Ive used it a while for any long term benefits.

If you would like to try for yourself you can get Nature’s Best Vitamin C Serum over on Amazon. Of course if you’re a Prime member you’ll have it in 2 days with free shipping.

Hyperbiotics Pro-15 Probiotics

May 2, 2014 by Jeff Davidson Leave a Comment

Hyprerbiotics Pro-15

If you have followed me here you know I have suffered from LPR Gerd for awhile. I have spent the past few years trying to find a balance of medication and diet to keep it under control with some success. My latest trial is with probiotics. I have tried probiotics with things like Good Belly shots and juice but even though I loved them it got to be to expensive to make a daily habit.

Most of you may already know the benefits of loading up your gut with the good bugs provided by probiotics to battle the evil forces of bad bugs. There are tons of articles out there talking about this and I’m not here to repeat them nor am I any type of expert. Just do the google thing to find out more how probiotics can be good for your health.

Hyperbiotics Pro-15

Hyperbionics Cap

Im I a nerd for loving this?

What I am here to talk about is this new probiotic that I was asked to give a try, Hyperbiotics Pro-15. Ive been  taking Hyperbiotics Pro-15 now for a little over two weeks and so far I’m happy with it. Starting with the little things such as the bottle design, yes the bottle itself. I love that it has a little teardrop opening that  will allow just one pill to roll out it a time. I’m just weird that way I guess I just think that’s cool.

The pill itself is nifty as well. It just a little round ball pack with 5 billion little bugs to help you with a healthy gut. I always wondered how they count these things, I mean what if mine only has 4,999,999,999? Anyway this ‘pearl’ as they call it is so small compared to other probiotics it amazing how they get all them in there. It’s only 1/4″ in diameter compared to some of the other horse pills out there that can be an inch long. They are also time released and protected from your stomach acids as well as being gluten/lactose/soy free and 100% vegetarian.

Hyperbionics size

Size of Hyperbionics vs Pain Pill vs Superman

You can read all the details about it on their own website at Hyperbiotics.com I’m not going to copy and paste them here. I’ll just tell you how it has benefited me. Well the biggest benefit appears to benefit everyone, just ask the wife (TMI alert). With the meds and my stomach issue I have had some wicked gas and since starting Hyperbiotics and has almost dissappeared. I have also experienced  improved digestion and appetite. I will say on the first couple days I did experience some cramping but it may have been other factors like I hadn’t been taking my stomach meds (damn insurance) or it was just a big battle between the new forces for good and the old bad bugs. Either way everything is great now.

Oh and these guys don’t require refrigeration. Just keep in a cool dry place, so I guess if you live in Arizona it does require it, and is guaranteed shelf life of 18 months. This is great for me cause if it’s not on my desk on front of me in the morning I will most likely forget to take it.

If you are interested in trying this little pearls yourself you can find Hyperbiotics Pro-15 on Amazon where Prime members can get it shipped free!

Disclosure: I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. Always check with your physician before starting any supplement product. My Delayed Fitbit Review

January 9, 2014 by Jeff Davidson Leave a Comment

fitbit flexI’ve been using a fitbit flex for about 6 months or longer now and decided to throw my two cents out there in a short and sweet review. What is a fitbit you ask? Well its one of many wearable fitness trackers. You wear it on your rest and it basically measures how far you walk in a day, even tracks how you sleep at night. With this data it can help you stay on track and become more healthy.

There are tons of reviews out there going over every feature of the device and its accompanying website so I’m not going to do that. Ill just tell you that I have love just about everything about it. I wear it 24/7 (except when charging) and check often to see how close I am to getting to my step goal of the day. Often heading out for a short walk just so I can make the goal. One of the best things is the alarm feature that I use to remind me to take my drugs (ok meds). So on function alone i’ll sell you one no problem.

The Problem With my Fitbit

Ok I did say JUST about everything was loved so lets get into the couple things I don’t and which you won’t hear on most reviews. The biggest is the wristband itself. Dont get me wrong it is comfortable to wear and love that you get 2 sizes and its adjustable.

The thing is they tell you you can wear in in the shower, swimming and in the water anytime. Well my experience this would not be a good idea, maybe I’m in the water to much I don’t know. What I do know is that the adhesive they use to to attach the band together (right above the black led line) doesn’t seem to hold well with what I am assuming is a lot of water use. It may be that Im in hot water often as I am in a hot tub many times during the week to help with chronic pain issues. I am also in a pool often as well so maybe its the chlorine? If its not meant to be used in this manner then there should be more of a warning (unless I missed it somewhere) instead of just saying its ok to wear in the water.

My first band fell apart within the first 2-3 months. They offered to replace it if I could produce the receipt, but sorry I don’t keep those that long (clean my pockets out after a week or two). So I just started using the second band. The second band is now showing stress and coming apart in the same place so ill have to purchase another band soon which of course seem to be available only online.

Besides this I love it and will continue to try and use it. Just wanted you to be aware of this little flaw when considering which one you will purchase, it may have me looking at an UP or some other one that comes out this year that is of one piece construction.

How about you, whats your experience with your fitbit or other fitness device?

What I hate to Hear From a Doctor

December 15, 2013 by Jeff Davidson 1 Comment

docter newsThere are many things we don’t like to hear from our doctors. Besides the give, bad news like you have cancer or time for your rectal exam. Being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia along with acid reflux LPR there is one thing they tend to say at a visit that I cringe over.

Let’s Try A New Medication!

With Fibro it can be a long trial and error finding a medication or cocktail of meds that help you. Meanwhile it’s always a new set of side effects to go through as your body gets used to it. Then starting over when it does nothing or makes things worse.

This time around it’s my acid reflux that’s causing a change and the lucky candidate is… Dexilant!

Latest Endoscopy Results

I went in for an annual endoscopy a few weeks ago and only thing I remember coming out of the anesthesia was that he wanted me to double my Pantoprazole on top of my evening ranitidine. Mentioned that saw something as well and scheduled me for ultrasound and blood test for my liver. Now when I was fully awake this didn’t stress me at all, nooooo.

Well after getting those things done I had my follow up visit this last week. Good news is liver is fine, just slightly enlarged but that may be from other meds (going to chat with other doctors). The thing was that he saw was what they call Esophagel Varices which is the enlarging of the smaller blood vessels in the esophagus.  Kinda like varicose veins in the leg I guess (ewwww). This is sometimes caused by liver problems backing up blood flow. So they have no idea what is cause it then. (another thing I don’t like to hear from a doctor)

Anyway the other things he saw was erosion of the stomach lining and increase erosion and irritation in the throat. The good news was that the Barrett’s is stable and no advancement.

Oh Ya, The New Medication

So the big thing is to continue to try and decrease the acid production to allow the throat to heal and since the Pantoprazole, Prilosec and ranitidine were not doing the trick she decided we should try this relatively new medication. Now besides what I mentioned above, whenever they say ‘new drug’ one of two things pop in my head. Either it’s not covered by insurance or the co-pay is way to high for me. So I left with a bunch of samples to try for two weeks and if they actually help then she thinks we can push it through insurance since the others haven’t helped and being on them for so long.

Dexilant is still a PPI drug like the others but has an immediate release as well as a delayed release and lasts for 24 hrs. It has also been noted to be more effective than the others so I’m giving it a try. It does have a few benefits, for one only one pill instead of 3 a day and the other is I don’t have to time it with meals.

Oh and it comes in a pretty blue.

Fibromyalgia, A Cause Found?

October 29, 2013 by Jeff Davidson 2 Comments

Fibromyalgia Cause

PRNewsFoto/Intidyn

An article was posted in the Washington Times Communities a week or so ago about how a couple of Doctors doing research and a study have found the cause of Fibromyalgia. Little googling and you can find the actual press release was back in June on the company’s website.

Their research in a nut shell (at least as I understand it) believes the cause comes from AV shunts in our hands and feet. These little guys act as thermostats to regulate temperature in our extremities. Doing this by controlling blood flow, which not only cools and heats but brings nutrients and takes away the trash from our muscles. When these do not work right temperature can go haywire affecting nerves and muscles, thus giving the multitude of Fibromyalgia symptoms. Also can cause build up of lactic acid in the muscles causing pain that can travel through out the body and overall fatigue.

It sounds interesting, and plausible to me with how I have felt. The biggest take away I see for those with fibromyalgia is that there is a cause and it is real, it is not just in your head as some would have you believe.

Just wanted to get this out there in case others with fibro haven’t seen it. Along with the article in July  about there is now a blood test for Fibromyalgia, there is hope and people are working on it!

Original article: Fibromyalgia solved; a pathology, not in the mind

News Release: Fibromyalgia not in your Head

If you have Fibromyalgia what do you think about a cause being found?

First Experience with Acupuncture: Ouch

October 16, 2013 by Jeff Davidson Leave a Comment

First TIme AcupunctureYa, that’s my leg there looking like a porcupine (sexy legs though huh). I have read, and been told, that acupuncture is a great therapy for all sorts of aligments. Such as in my case pain, fatigue, trouble sleeping as well as digestive disorders. The thought of having needles stuck into me and left there never really appealed to me though. Also their was the cost factor as it is generally not covered by insurance (of course I fell into that category)

Well an opportunity came up that I could give it a try for free, ya I know in hindsight you get what you pay for. A local natural therapy clinic was having an open house and offering free Accupuncture and massage for the day, hey can’t beat that. So I head over and signed up, first getting a chair massage which was just ok. Then I got called in for my poking.

Welcome to the Community…

First off to keep costs and your fee down it is done in a “community” environment, meaning its a large room where up to 8 people can be getting treatment at the same time. Knowing this when I walked in my first impression was good. The room was done in tranquil colors, meditative music playing softly, each “bed” (this done in air quotes as I will explain) area had semi transparent fabric material draped between them (but you could still see each other, especially across from you). I was guided by dr. beardface (If you ever watched scrubs you’ll understand, was his twin) to my “bed” and sat down, yes sat. Now I’ll explain the bed part, it was kind of a sophisticated patio furniture with a bed sheet over it. You sat down then they reclined you back before the treatment.

After being reclined in a comfy position the acupuncturist asked me “what could they do for me today?”. Besides wanting an ice tea but knowing I wasn’t getting one I explained that I was diagnosed with fibro but today only thing bothering me was shoulders, neck and jaw clenching. Oh and that it was my first time so be gentle. Next he told be to stick out my tongue, checked my pulse quickly the started jabbing me with needles. No warning, no this will not hurt a bit or “any questions” just started sticking it to me.

I’m not ashamed to say some actually hurt.

There’s No Crying in Acupuncture

I didn’t cry or anything, I’m still a dude, but I was told they wouldn’t hurt by others. This should have been a clue to just stop and leave but already had a dozen needles in me so I thought I’d see how it goes. After he was done he said to relax and he would be back in a bit. Yes I’m going to relax with a couple dozen needles in me. So I prepared to enter zen mode and chill out for awhile when I noticed him heading over to one of those “beds” across from me where a patient had just left. He grabbed the sheet I just kind of flicked it up to get all the wrinkles out and smooth it making it look fresh THEN BROUGHT THE NEXT PATIENT IN. This was my second clue, I mean what if the person before me was a bit sweaty and had cooties or something. I know they try to keep costs down so you get a low fee but this was just wrong.

20-30 mins later he came back to me and started removing needles. Again no word of warning, no how are you feeling just started plucking me like a turkey and some of them felt worse coming out then they did going in. When done he just said take your time and left.

The worst part of all this is starting an hour or so afterwards I started having an anxiety episode that lasted well into the next day. Not sure if it was a coincidence or a combination of things from the day but I haven’t had an anxiety episode in a few months, so this does make me a little leery of acupuncture at the moment. Now I know with their open house they may have been seeing a few more people than normal and most they will never see again, but they could have been a little more personable (thats how you get future clients right?) and changed the sheets. I hope both of these items are different when they actually see clients on a normal basis.

Rounding it All Up

This clinic normally operates on a non-profit status and offers services on a sliding fee schedule based on your income. This is great to help those that can’t afford it normally and are seeking alternative therapies, but due to my first experience with them I will not use them. I’ll save my pennies for elsewhere.

On that note I have not been totally turned off to acupuncture. My chiropractor offers it as well and I think she is great so may have a go with her soon. Also found another that came highly recommended with lower fees than most that I’m looking into as well, and she teaches yoga as well! Win Win.

So moral of the story is do your research first, get recommendations, and even interview the person first to see how you feel about them. Its not something to try on “free” day.

Have you tried acupuncture? How was your experience? Let me know in the comments below, would love to hear about it.

How Can You Tell What’s Working When You Try So Much

September 10, 2013 by Jeff Davidson Leave a Comment

20130910-214743.jpgWith fibromyalgia different treatments effect different people in different ways. It’s often like that expression lets throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. When you are trying so many things at once how do you know what is really helping and what is not?

Treating Fibro is very much trying many things and finding a right combination that helps you the most, most of the time. Along with this thought process I have been doing many things and adding more to the tool box as I discover them. Starting of course with medications that got me to a point where I could focus on doing more here is my list of what I am currently doing:

Effexor
Ambien
Gabapentin
Vitamins D3, B12, B Complex
Fish Oil
Magnesium

Meditation
Mindful breathing
Yoga
Cycling/Walking
Swimming

Chiropractic
Massage therapy

Diet changes
Pain Management Therapy

May seem like a lot but again you want to try any and everything to find relief. I didn’t just start doing everything at once but been adding things the past couple months. Some are daily, others a couple times a week or month.

So there in lies the problem. I have been for the most part been feeling better. More tolerable may be a better term. Of course I still have those days that are not so great (especially with this last heat wave) but overall decent and more functional. So how do I know what has worked and perhaps what is a waste of time?

I ask more rhetorical cause like I mentioned I think it’s a combination of treatments so I really don’t see me cutting anything out. Well I would of course like to be more drug free but we’ll see how that goes.

So for any of you that are still seeking a solution, I say keep trying new ideas. Add to your tool box of relief until you find the right combination.

Whats in your tool box?
