One of the biggest things a photographer worries about is dirty lenses and it’s something you can’t take care of with a pack of Orbit gum. If you own a DSLR you biggest investment is in your ‘glass’ and you shouldn’t be cleaning it with any ole cloth.
The best way to keep your lenses clean that I have found that is also inexpensive is to invest in a set of Lenspens. The set comes with three pens, each with their own special purpose in life. What’s even better is that they come in a nice microfiber case that can also be used for cleaning.
The main pen I use the most is of course for your lenes. Each pen has two sides to it, a brush side and then the carbon cleaning pad. This little pad allows you to clean your lens without using any liquid and will remove all oils and grime. Its embedded with a unique carbon compound that will absorb oils and other contaminants, Just like cleaning a window with newspaper in the old days. Never dries out so its always ready to clean! It is important though that you use the brush side first to be sure you get all the large dust particles off otherwise you may scratch the lens. For those that know me it is also great at removing cake!
The next one I use the most is the viewfinder pen, the MicroPRO. I have always had trouble keeping my viewfinders clean with a cloth. Just not quite able to get it all clean. The Lenspen Micro Pro is a perfect fit for the viewfinder, getting even into the corners and gets it squeaky clean. Again use your brush side first to get all the dust off then the carbon pad to remove oils and such.
I don’t use the last pen in the kit to often as it’s for filters. In my line of photography, studio portraits I don’t use filters. Those that shoot landscape a lot will want to keep this one handy for all their filters in the field.
In the end I have found using the Lenspens to have speed my cleaning process and is great when Im out shooting somewhere for a on the spot cleaning when I accidentally touch the glass. You can buy the pens individually for $6-8 but the kit is a steal at $15 on amazon. Just search (or click the link) for LensPen New DSLR Pro Camera Cleaning Kit, NDSLRK-1 They do offer models mad for point an clicks, camera phones and a cool cleaning tool for your iPads.
